Stewart G. Pollock '54, a retired New Jersey Supreme Court justice, will receive the New Jersey State Bar Foundation's highest award, the prestigious Medal of Honor, for his longtime commitment to New Jersey's legal legacy. The award, given each year to candidates who have made exemplary contributions to improving the justice system, will be presented at the foundation's annual Medal of Honor Awards Reception on Thursday, June 12, at the New Jersey Law Center in New Brunswick.

After Hamilton Pollock attended New York University Law School, where he was a Root-Tilden scholar, and for more than two decades he has served on the school foundation's board of trustees. He currently chairs the New Jersey Supreme Court Committee on the Professional Rules of Responsibility and co-chairs the governor's Judicial Advisory Panel. In a career divided between private practice and public office, Pollock has served as an assistant United States attorney, Board of Public Utilities commissioner, State Commission of Investigation commissioner, and a member of the governor's counsel, in addition to serving 20 years on the New Jersey Supreme Court. While serving on the Court, he earned an LL.M from the University of Virginia and received an honorary degree from Hamilton College in 1995. 

After a stint as an associate with Toner, Crowley & Vanderbilt in Newark, Pollock was sworn in as an assistant U.S. attorney, and later became commissioner of the New Jersey Department of Public Utilities. From there he went on to a partnership with Schenck, Price, Smith & King in Morristown, and subsequently became chief counsel to Governor Byrne. He also served as a member of the New Jersey Commission on Investigation. From 1979 to 1999 he served as associate justice of the state Supreme Court. For the past nine years he has been of counsel to Riker, Danzig, Scherer, Hyland & Perretti in Morristown. 

Pollock's two decades on the Court produced a great number of decisions that are now standards in property and tort law. He chairs the New Jersey Supreme Court Committee on Rules of Professional Conduct and served as a member of the Advisory Committee for the Restatement of Law Governing Lawyers of the American Law Institute. During 1991-92, he chaired the Appellate Judges' Conference of the American Bar. A federal court mediator, he is also a CPR neutral for the CPR Institute for Dispute Resolution and a commercial arbitrator for the American Arbitration Association. He is a trustee with both the New Jersey Conservation Foundation and the College of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey.
