Nine students, members of Hamilton College publication staffs including the Spectator, the Continental, the Green Apple and the Hamiltonian attended the College Media Advisors Convention, in New York City, March 15 – 17.

All Hamilton attendees hold leadership roles in the publications and participated in workshops that ranged from cover design to managing and motivating peers to accessing school records through legal action. The trip was sponsored by the Hamilton College Media Board.

Pat Hodgens '09, who is responsible for The Spectator's copy editor staff, took a course called "The Editor's Eye" lead by New York Times copy editors and "Don't Blow Your Top" on rewriting leads and headlines. He said, "We learned some things that will really help us put out a better paper, and I am excited to get back to school and start implementing what we learned."

Guest speakers at the convention included ABC World News Anchor Charles Gibson and Byron Pitts, contributor to 60 Minutes and chief national correspondent for The CBS Evening News with Katie Couric.

In a Hamilton blog post, "You Should Probably Be Jealous," Luke Maher '11, who is the editor-in-chief of The Hamiltonian, wrote about his time in New York City. "Student media representatives from all over the country have descended on Times Square with a host of professionals in the publication industry to compare notes, get tips and network," he blogged. "Hamilton really has given me a great spring break."
