Members of the College Democrats and the College Republicans, as well as two independent students, participated in a public debate on current political issues on April 28. The topics discussed by the panelists included the war in Iraq, the war on terror, affirmative action, taxes and the economy, education and healthcare.

Debating for the College Republicans were Jay Waclawski '05, Dana Martin '06, John Knauss '06 and Joe Jansen '07. The College Democrats panel included Jon Kuhl '06, Ian Mandel '06, Dan Bleeker '06 and Caroline O'Shea '07. Two students affiliated with third parties, Young Han '06, a Green Party member, and Jon Rick '05, a Libertarian Party member, also took part in the debate.

The questions for the formal portion of the debate were submitted by professors of government Peter Cannavo, Richard Skinner, Steve Orvis, Carlos Yordan and Phil Klinkner. Students in the audience asked additional questions of the panelists after the formal debate was over.

The event was moderated by Paul Bleiberg '06 and Professor Yordan. Bleiberg, who organized the event, said that the debate was "a good opportunity for Hamilton students to listen to and engage in discussion about important issues." He added that he hopes to organize similar debates in the future.
