Nigel Westmaas, assistant professor of African studies, has co-written (with Juanita De Barros from McMaster University) an historical commentary on British Guiana (Guyana) that records Marcus Garvey’s Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA) work in the colony in the early 20th century.

Marcus Garvey and UNIA Papers : The Caribbean Diaspora 1910-1920 is edited by renowned Garvey scholar Robert Hill and contains commentaries from scholars on countries across the Caribbean.  It is published by Duke University Press.

Both Westmaas and De Barros also researched Guyanese archives and provided supporting letters, intelligence reports, legal records, speeches, diplomatic dispatches, newspaper articles and other documentation that cover the evolution and work of Garvey’s movement in British Guiana in the period.
