“Microclimates and the Survival of Overwintering Monarchs” by William R. Kenan Professor of Biology Ernest Williams was published in the summer issue of American Butterflies magazine.

Williams’ article summarizes the challenges faced by monarch butterflies as they spend the winter high on mountains 100 miles west of Mexico City and their use of protected microclimates to avoid freezing at night and overheating during the day.

Several photos of monarchs, taken by Williams when he visited an overwintering colony in 2007 and 2008, are also included. In addition, one of his photos of a monarch cluster is featured on the magazine cover.

American Butterflies is published quarterly by the North American Butterfly Association.
