Jessica Dietrich, who was a visiting member of Hamilton's classics department from 1996 to 1998, will deliver the Winslow Lecture lecture, titled "Dido and the Caesars: The Imperial Legacy of Vergil's Heroine," on Monday, April 16, at 4:10 p.m. in the Red Pit.

Dietrich, who was a visiting member of Hamilton's classics department from 1996 to 1998, is now assistant professor of classics at the University of Maryland, College Park.  Professor Dietrich was educated at Swarthmore College, the International Center for Classical Studies in Rome, the American School of Classical Studies at Athens, and the University of
Southern California, where she received her Ph.D. 

Her scholarly work focuses on Roman literature in the late first century of our era.  Her
lecture will deal with the interpretation of Vergil's Dido from the age of Augustus to that of the later emperors, the Flavians in particular.  She may also discuss some medieval treatments of Vergil's heroine.  This event, sponsored by the Department of Classics, is open to the public, free of charge.  Refreshments will be served.
