Hamilton College placed first in the varsity eights against Tufts University on the Malden River outside Boston on April 3.

Skies were sunny with temperatures in the 40s and calm conditions, building to a 10-to-15 mile-per-hour head wind during the later races.

Hamilton's varsity eight finished the course in 7 minutes, 16.4 seconds, and Tufts crossed the finish line in 7:23.6. Hamilton’s second varsity eight finished second in 7:19.5, just 4.1 seconds behind Tufts.

Hamilton's varsity four placed second with a time of 9:01.2, while Tufts finished in 8:50.4.

Hamilton also rowed against the University of Vermont. Hamilton placed second in the varsity eights with a time of 7:50.9, only 8.8 seconds behind Vermont. The second varsity eights finished behind Vermont with a time of 8:17.8.

Sophie Breene ’12 was coxswain for the varsity eight against Tufts. The rest of the boat included Rachel Johnson ‘13 at stroke, Katie Peterson ‘12 in the bow seat and the following rowers (seats seven through two in descending order): Allison Boyaris ‘12, Antonia Villa ’12, Becca Straw ‘14, Helen Higgins ‘13, Fiona Hoffman-Harland ’13 and Leah Sorensen ‘14.

Kelsey Burke ’13 was coxswain for the second varsity eight against Tufts. The rest of the boat included Keara Fenzel ’14 at stroke, Iris Greenquist ‘13 in the bow seat and the following rowers (seats seven through two in descending order): Virginia Slattery ‘12, Pam Lewis ‘11, Alice Dannenberg ‘11, Allie Hoeltzel ‘14, Meg Schlosser ’13 and Ally Fried ‘13.

Breene was coxswain for the varsity fours. The rest of the boat included Lewis at stroke, Hannah Carlisle ’14 in the bow seat, Schlosser in 3-seat and Fried in 2-seat.

Catherine Florea ’11 was coxswain for the varsity eight against Vermont. The rest of the boat included Johnson at stroke, Peterson in the bow seat and the following rowers (seats seven through two in descending order): Boyaris, Villa, Straw, Higgins, Hoffman-Harland and Sorensen.

Burke was coxswain for the second varsity eight against Vermont. The rest of the boat included Fenzel at stroke, Greenquist in the bow seat and the following rowers (seats seven through two in descending order): Slattery, Hoeltzel, Dannenberg, Michelle Shafer ‘14, Carlisle and Dom Paiement ‘12.

Hamilton hosts Rochester Institute of Technology in Rome, N.Y., on Saturday, April 9.
