Steven Yao
Associate Professor of English and Associate Dean of Faculty for Diversity Initiatives Steve Yao presented a paper at the American Comparative Literature Association held in New Orleans from April 1-4.

Yao's paper, "The Scholar and the Orator: Wen I, H.T. Tsiang, and the Transpacific Logic of Early Chinese/American Poetry," discussed protest poetry composed in Chinese and English by writers of Chinese descent in the U.S. during the era of formal exclusion. Focusing on works by Wen I and H.T. Tsiang from the late 1920s, Yao addressed the cultural and historical logic of their respective responses in verse to American sinophobia, which had long since acquired official legal status through the policy of Chinese exclusion.
