Deborah Newlen '87: Computers No Substitute for Teaching

Waldorf School of the Peninsula in Mountainview, CA, where Deborah Newlen '87 serves as high school co-chair and a teacher of English and drama, was recently featured in the news for its unique stance on technology—excluding computers from the classroom until high school.  There are not even whiteboards in the building, only chalkboards, and cell phones have to be kept in lockers. Newlen, who was interviewed for CBS, explained the policy: "A computer is a good tool. It’s a fun toy. It can even be a tutor, but it’s not a teacher."  More ...

NY Program Students, Alumni Gather for Wall St. Association Event

Hamilton’s semi-annual Wall Street Association meeting on Oct. 5 featured a discussion on the current state of the capital markets with a panel of alumni experts. The event at the Racquet and Tennis Club was moderated by Susan Skerritt K’77, P’11,  of The Bank of New York Mellon. Panelists include Harold Bogle ’75, P’14, Credit Suisse; Andrew Taylor ’88, JP Morgan Chase Co.; and Jennifer Murphy Hill ’87,  Bank of America Merrill Lynch.  More ...

Biopic documentary Rediscovering Alexander Hamilton premieres on Monday, April 11, on local PBS stations. It will air in the Clinton – Utica area on Monday at 10 p.m. on WCNYHD (853), Tuesday, April 12 at 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. on 853, and Wednesday, April 13, on WCNY (13) at 3 a.m. Check local listings for other areas.  More ...

Burgaw, N.C., ASB Group Welcomed by Local Alumni
A group of nine Hamilton students traveled to Burgaw Elementary School near Wilmington, N.C., on their Alternative Spring Break trip, March 21-27. Through this outreach program, they’re helping students with homework and participating in after-school activities. Students on the trip are Trang Nyugen '13, Jennifer Hightower '12, Kristen Scherb '13, Spencer Gulbronson '12, Clare Browne '12, Joelle  Adler '13, Meghan Woolley '13, Ada Horne '13, and Meghan Carter '12.
