A paper by Alan Cafruny, the Henry Platt Bristol Professor of International Affairs, was recently published by the Valdai Discussion Club as Valdai Paper #10. Titled “Europe’s Twin Crises: The Logic and Tragedy of Contemporary German Power,” the article “explores the origins and evolution of the two interlocking crises that now engulf the European continent: an imploding monetary union and the intensification of great power rivalry in Europe following the ‘end of the post-cold war era’.”  More ...

Panel of Experts Questions Connection Between Islam and Extremism

With extensive media coverage of gruesome acts committed by ISIS, Al-Qaeda, Hezbollah, Jihadists, the Taliban and the Boko Haram, to name a few, many Americans wonder why Islam lends itself so readily to violent extremism. The same question has been recently raised on-campus by the Enquiry, a weekly opinion editorial sponsored by the Alexander Hamilton Institute, prompting the Muslim Students Association (MSA) and the Arabic and Middle East Club (AMEC) to invite a panel of experts to campus in an effort to deepen the community’s understanding of the connection, or lack thereof, between Islam and extremism.  More ...

Alan Cafruny, the Henry Platt Bristol Professor of International Affairs, participated in a November conference, Global Governance: Nominal, Real and Alternative Structures, at Higher School of Economics in Russia.  The conference was largely focused on the paradigm shift in geopolitical and geoeconomic structures of the modern world, as well as the underlying causes and long-term implications of such changes.  More ...

Nejla Asimovic ’16 is spending her summer researching the accession of Serbia to the European Union (EU)  in an Emerson project under the guidance of Professor of Government Alan Cafruny. Early this year Serbia began formal membership discussions with the EU, bringing it one step closer to accession. Asimovic says the goal of her research is “to understand the remarkable transformation that Serbia has gone through over the last decade and to explore the remaining obstacles on Serbia’s path to EU accession.”  More ...

Alan Cafruny, the Henry Platt Bristol Professor of International Affairs, was interviewed for an article titled “Student Debt: Crippling for All Ages and Not Going Away Soon” on the FOX Business site on July 29. “The problem of student debt is not just ‘economic’ in the narrow sense,” said Cafruny. “Debt has all kinds of consequences for society: it imposes social discipline, circumscribing young people’s options, making them more acquiescent and conformist in all sorts of subtle and not so subtle ways.”  More ...
