Six Spend Semester Studying in India

December 10, 2010 

Six Hamilton students spent the fall semester on the New York State Independent College Consortium for Study in India (NYSICCSI) program. Katie Barth ’12, Katherine Costa ’12, Beth Foster ’12, Kate Harloe ’12, Elsie Love ’12 and Charlotte Munson ’11 are part of the group, led this semester by faculty director Hamilton Associate Professor of History Lisa Trivedi and assistant director Hamilton alumnus Jack Reigeluth '07. The students traveled throughout northern India, took academic courses and conducted various independent fieldwork research projects.

Daniel Custodio '00 among Richmond's Top 40 Under 40

Style Weekly has named among Daniel Custodio '00 Richmond's "Top 40 Under 40," a list that recognizes young men and women who are "paying attention to the changes truly needed in the community." Custodio is the poet in residence for the Richmond Public Schools Arts and Humanities Center, where he is inspiring a new generation of poets and focusing particularly on helping non-English speaking students become comfortable with American culture. Teacher Eugenia Yeuell observes that that Custodio "calls for students to jettison out of their comfort zones and expose themselves."

On Nov. 3, Hamilton's Chapter of FACE AIDS presented A Closer Walk, the first film to depict humankind's confrontation with the global AIDS epidemic, directed by Robert Bilheimer '66. A Closer Walk draws on over 50 interviews with people with HIV/AIDS, orphans, doctors, scientists, researchers, economists, human rights advocates, and government leaders and explores the causes of AIDS, human rights and dignity, and the universal need for action.

John G. Rice '78 Named GE's Head of Global Operations

November 8, 2010 

The General Electric (GE) board of directors has named Hamilton alumnus and trustee John G. Rice ’78 as head of global operations. Rice, a GE vice chairman since 2005, will be in charge of GE’s growth outside the United States. The appointment is effective Jan. 1, 2011, and Rice will relocate to Hong Kong, according to a GE press release.

Amanda Siepiola '02 is featured in the District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS) 2010-2011 School Year Calendar. The calendar highlights 12 of the school district’s most effective and inspirational teachers with pictures and quotations each month. "Our teachers work hard every day to shape our children’s lives, build their dreams and create the foundation for the future of our city," said Mayor Adrian M. Fenty. "With this calendar, we honor our teachers and say 'thank you' for your dedication to our children."

Ruth Duggan '08, a member of Mars & Co since graduating from Hamilton with a degree in physics, has been promoted to senior associate consultant. Ruth has worked with several of Mars & Co's Fortune 100 clients, including ones in consumer packaged goods and retailing. Mars & Co is a global management consulting firm specializing in business strategy and operational improvement.

Ross Ufberg '07 Publishes Translation

Northern Illinois University Press has published a translation of Tamara Petkevich’s Memoir of a Gulag Actress, co-translated by Ross Ufberg '07 and Yasha Klots. In "an abridged translation that retains the grace and passion of the original," Ufberg and Yasha tell the story of a Russian girl whose father was arrested when she was 17 for his Communist beliefs and who was later arrested herself.

Paul Reichert '90 and The Lemonade Ripple

Paul Reichert '90 released his first children's book, The Lemonade Ripple, this year to much success. The book, which Reichert both wrote and illustrated, tells the story of Caroline, a young girl who starts a lemonade stand to raise money for a friend in need, and details how her goodwill affects an entire town. Reichert recently held a book party in Washington, D.C., which attracted 60 guests, including Hamilton alumni. He has also beendoing readings at elementary schools and children's bookstores. All profits from The Lemonade Ripple go to The Foundation for Community Betterment.
