The piece describes how as the number of law school applicants has declined, some schools are negotiating scholarships and bargaining with prospective students while other schools don’t need to.

The History Press has recently published Cradle of the American Circus: Poems from Somers, New York by Jo Pitkin K'78. In her poetry collection, the Somers native commemorates the traveling menagerie that helped birth the American circus. Essays by local historians supplement the work.

Max Vaickus '12 Takes First Step on Path to Medical Career

New Grad Takes Position With Boston Sports and Shoulder Center

Max Vaickus ’12 had been coming to Hamilton long before his first year as a student on the Hill. For years, he would accompany his family each winter and summer to visit his brother Louis Vaickus ’05. The Hill’s stately buildings made an impression early on: “that’s what I thought a college was supposed to look like,” Vaickus remembers. When it was time to choose his own college, he too picked Hamilton. Now, he will soon begin a career as a medical assistant with the Boston Sports and Shoulder Center.

Record-breaking Fundraising Success in 2011-12

In its bicentennial year, Hamilton has broken all previous philanthropic records, raising $42.5 million in 2011-12 versus the past record total, $30.8 million in 2006-07. This year’s success pushed the three-year Bicentennial Initiatives campaign beyond its original goal of $117 million 16 months ahead of its scheduled conclusion. In response, the Board of Trustees in June raised the goal to $133 million.

Hamilton College Breaks Ground for New Theatre and Studio Arts Center

On the eve of the completion of the Ruth and Elmer Wellin Museum of Art, groundbreaking for the College’s new theatre and studio arts center was celebrated on Friday, July 20. The theatre and studio arts center is part of an arts complex that includes the Wellin Museum of Art, the Molly Root House and a revitalized pond and landscaping.

After Kristin Stenerson walked across the stage as a member of Hamilton’s Bicentennial class, she walked into her new position as a strategy and operations consultant for Deloitte, one of the world’s largest professional service employers. For Stenerson, a mathematics and economics major, the job at Deloitte is the culmination of years of hard work both inside and outside the classroom.

Jessica Gold Newman '01 has recently launched Dobbin Clothing with Catherine Doyle.

The company's name is inspired by the English word "dobbin," a workhorse, and Newman and Doyle would like their clothing to be the "workhorses of women's wardrobes." Their goal is to offer the types of clothing their friends and families have always wanted: a mix of classic and vintage silhouettes, manufactured in the United States and made of Italian fabric, and flattering for real bodies.

Anthony Mathieu '12 Joins Boston Teacher Residency Program

Considering how significant even a single semester’s coursework can be, it’s not surprising that many Hamilton students graduate feeling they need a break from formal education. Not so for Anthony Mathieu ’12, who was accepted into a graduate program at Boston Teacher Residency (BTR). Mathieu will spend a year as a resident in a Boston public school classroom in pursuit of a master’s degree in education.
