Economics Faculty Contribute to International Teaching Text

Three members of Hamilton’s economics department were invited to contribute chapters to the International Handbook on Teaching and Learning Economics, edited by Gail M. Hoyt and KimMarie McGoldrick.  Ann L. Owen, Stephen Wu and Elizabeth J. Jensen authored chapters.

Weather Catastrophes Influence Legislative Support for Environment

An article titled “Study: Does enduring extreme weather make you vote liberal?,” appearing on the USA Today website on Dec. 30, reported on a study written by four Hamilton economists. Henry Platt Bristol Professor of Economics Ann Owen, Assistant Professor of Economics Emily Conover and Associate Professors of Economics Julio Videras and Stephen Wu co-authored the study, “Heat Waves, Droughts, and Preferences for Environmental Policy.” The Weather Channel also reported on the study on Jan. 2.

Monetary Policy Students Advance to Final Round of Fed Challenge

Receive Honorable Mention and Special Award for Best Teamwork

Students in Hamilton's Monetary Policy class traveled to the New York Federal Reserve Bank on Nov. 16 and competed in the semi-final round of the Fed Challenge in the morning, advancing to the final round in the afternoon.  They were awarded an Honorable Mention for their performance overall and were recognized with a special award for "best teamwork."

Palmer '11 and Owen Publish in Applied Economics Letters

October 12, 2011 

A paper titled “Macroeconomic conditions and technical trading profitability in foreign exchange markets” and co-authored by Henry Platt Bristol Professor of Economics Ann Owen and Brent Palmer ’11 has been published in Applied Economics Letters. The article was a result of work that Palmer did last year as part of his senior honors thesis which Owen supervised.

Owen Discusses Bernanke's Options

Marketplace Interview Focuses on Federal Reserve

Ann Owen, the Henry Platt Bristol Professor of Economics, was interviewed for an American Public Media Marketplace evening report about what Federal Reserve chairman Ben Bernanke might announce at Friday’s conference in Jackson Hole, Wyo. Owen said the Fed could trade its holdings in short-term Treasuries for long-term ones and that  the goal of that would be to lower long-term interest rates.

The segment, titled “Bernanke heads to Capitol Hill,” was broadcast on July 13 on Marketplace Morning Report.

Owen spoke with MarketPlace immediately following the Federal Reserve’s announcement that there would be no change in interest rates.
