Lawrence Chua, postdoctoral fellow in Asian Studies, recently presented a paper at the annual conference of the Society of Architectural Historians in Buffalo and at the Association of Asian Studies conference in San Diego.

In advance of the opening of Dannielle Tegeder: Painting in the Extended Field at the Ruth and Elmer Wellin Museum of Art, a video highlighting her work and exhibition was featured on the front page of artdaily.org on April 17. An abstract painter based in New York City, Tegeder’s work challenges the boundaries of traditional painting through the integration of animation, sculpture, installation, photography, and sound. The video was created by Hamilton junior Ben Salzman.

Associate Professor of Art History Stephen J. Goldberg published a chapter in the book Contemporary Chinese Art and Film: Theory Applied and Resisted (New Academia Publishing, 2013), edited by Jason C. Kuo of the University of Maryland.

Lawrence Chua, visiting assistant professor of art history, participated in several workshops recently. He presented from his ongoing research on leisure, race and nationalism in 20th-century Thai architecture at the Labour, Leisure, and Life Course from a Global Historical Perspective workshop at Humboldt University in Berlin, Feb. 13 to Feb. 15.

A book review by Associate Professor of Art History Stephen J. Goldberg was published in the latest issue of The China Journal No. 69 (January 2013), 245-247.  The review is of A New Thoughtfulness in Contemporary China: Critical Voices in Art and Aesthetics, edited by Jörg Huber and Zhao Chuan. Hong Kong University Press, 2011.

Visiting Professor of Art History Scott MacDonald will present the first film in the spring 2013 F.I.L.M. (Forum on Image and Language in Motion) series on Sunday, Feb. 10, at 2 p.m., in the Bradford Auditorium. The Eye of the Day (2001) is part one of filmmaker Leonard Retel Helmrich’s Indonesian Trilogy. The screening is free and open to the public.

“Knots in the Head: Interview with Michael Glawogger” by Visiting Professor of Art History Scott MacDonald was published in the current issue of Film Quarterly.

Associate Professor of Art History Stephen J. Goldberg presented a lecture titled “The Intimate Universe: Landscape Paintings of the Northern and Southern Song Dynasties” on Dec. 7 at the Institut National des Langues et Civilization Orientales (Inalco) in Paris.

Visiting Professor of Art History Scott MacDonald provided the catalog essay for the Criterion DVD/BluRay release of filmmaker Godfrey Reggio’s The Qatsi Trilogy.

Stephen J. Goldberg, associate professor of art history, recently delivered two invited lectures in Honolulu.
