Ten senior art concentrators, led by art professors Katharine Kuharic, Rebecca Murtaugh and Robert Knight, had the opportunity to travel to New York City to see the studio practice and work of established artists on Nov. 5-6. The artists included Saya Woolfalk, Deana Lawson, Matthew Day Jackson, David Humphrey, William Villalogo and Jason Karolak. The Dietrich Foundation and the Kirkland Endowment supported this event.

In conjunction with Kevin Kennedy Professor of Art Katharine Kuharic’s exhibition at P.P.O.W Gallery in New York City, poets Linda Norton, Wayne Koestenbaum and Eileen Myles will read from their work tonight (Nov. 1) at 6:30 p.m. Kuharic’s solo exhibition is titled Pound of Flesh and will be on display through Nov. 12 at P.P.O.W., located at 535 West 22nd Street.

An essay titled “On the Habits and Messages of Yellow” by Kevin Kennedy Professor of Art Katharine Kuharic appears in the 06/Global Color issue of Hand/Eye magazine. The publication, whose focus is “about connecting cultures and inspiring action,” dedicated this issue to the topic of color. In her essay, Kuharic shares her thoughts on yellow’s relevance to us. The article also includes a full page image of one of her paintings titled “Jack’s Original.”

The Emerson Gallery will present two exhibitions in conjunction with the college’s bicentennial celebration. The exhibitions will commemorate its cultural history while providing a view toward the future with objects from various campus collections and archives. Time Capsules and Cornerstones: 200 Years of Collective Memory at Hamilton and Learning to Look: Hamilton's Cabinets, Galleries and Museums Past, Present and Future will be on view Sept. 15 – Dec. 16. The exhibitions and related programs are free and open to the public.

Dean of Faculty Patrick Reynolds announced the promotion of five Hamilton faculty members to the rank of professor. Todd Franklin, philosophy; Marianne Janack, philosophy; Katherine Kuharic, art; Bruce Walczyk, dance and movement studies; and Steven Yao, English and creative writing, were promoted effective July 1.
