Curling Team Wins Division 5 National Championship
Hamilton’s Curling team took the Division 5 National Championship at the National College Curling Tournament, held March 16-18 at the North Shore Curling Club in Chicago.  Forty teams from 27 colleges and universities competed. Hamilton’s team consisted of Dave Hamilton (skip), Tom Irvin (vice), Katherine Alser (lead) and Yuqi Mao (second), all members of the class of 2009 and all chemistry majors. Simon Gives Lecture at International Association for the Philosophy of Sport Meeting
Robert Simon, the Marjorie and Robert McEwen Professor of Philosophy, gave the Warren Fraleigh Distinguished Scholar lecture at the 34th annual meeting of the International Association for the Philosophy of Sport held at Niagara Falls, Canada, in September. The title of his lecture was "Deserving to be Lucky: Reflections on Luck, Desert, and Fairness in Sport." In the lecture, Simon argued first that luck does not ruin or spoil athletic contests which often are conceived of as tests of pure skill, and second that initial inequalities in natural ability and environment do not preclude justifiable attributions of desert in sport although it may lessen their significance. In a section of his paper, Simon discussed colleague Dan Chambliss's book Champions: The Making of Olympic Swimmers.

Olympic Silver Medalist Kristy Kowal Visits Hamilton Swim Camp
The Hamilton College Competitive Swim Camp welcomed Olympic silver medalist Kristy Kowal as their guest clinician on July 12. Kowal was with the camp for one day; she gave a lecture in the morning, coached the campers in two swimming sessions, and joined them for an afternoon cook-out. More ...

Hamilton Faculty Compete in Covered Bridges Half Marathon
Three Hamilton College faculty members competed in the 13th annual Covered Bridges Half Marathon in South Central Vermont on June 6. Associate Professor of Philosophy Katheryn Doran, Visiting Assistant Professor of Philosophy Celeste Friend and Assistant Professor of Sociology Jenny Irons were among participants in the 13.1 mile race. It began in South Pomfret, Vt. and continued through Woodstock and into Quechee. Runners cross over or pass by four covered bridges along the route. More ...
