David Bell, senior associate director of the career center, was quoted in a July 28 Washington Post article focused on the important role played by funded internships in offering college students career-related summer job experience. Hamilton was included among the colleges that offer funding to support student interns in unpaid positions.

With a plethora of positive experiences working in development, Nick Stagliano ’11 knew that he wanted to go into fundraising after he graduated from Hamilton. Stagliano says that he’s lucky to have found the perfect job—his new position in the development office at The Juilliard School in New York City blends perfectly his passion for fundraising with his love for performance art and higher education.

History can be learned from many different perspectives. Primary Source, a nonprofit organization that provides alternative ways of learning,  supplements traditional techniques with additional resources for teachers. Elizabeth “Lizzy” Buhl ’12 is helping to accomplish this goal with an internship there,  supported by the Couper Fund through the Career Center.

An article appearing on The New York Times’ The Choice blog announced a forthcoming article in the Times Sunday Education Life section for which Jeannine Murtaugh, assistant director of the career center, was interviewed. “The Next Gate” addresses the graduate school admission process and includes interviews with admission representatives from graduate programs at Yale University, University of California (Berkeley) and University of Texas as well as with Murtaugh.

Sustainable, organic farming offers a fresh, local alternative to supermarket foods. However, some people might find it difficult to shop locally, and low-income individuals may have trouble affording farm shares and local food. Lauren Howe ’13 is working to correct both problems as an intern for Grow Food Northampton in Northampton, Mass.

Internships can be invaluable for students speculating about their futures; not only do internships offer an impressive boost to a student’s résumé, they also provide windows into the career world so that students can get a grasp on what types of job would be right or wrong for them.

A law degree can lead can lead to countless career paths, but regardless of a student’s goals, a district attorney’s office offers an exciting environment in which to learn about the legal field. Ephraim McDowell ’12, a sociology major with a minor in communication, is spending his summer with the Norfolk County District Attorney’s Office in Canton, Mass., working with one of the assistant district attorneys.

Documentaries have a way of making history come alive, and well-made and innovative documentaries are especially engrossing and vivid. Over the summer Brett Banhazl ’12 will work in Brighton, Mass., with American Experience, an award-winning television show featuring documentaries on various topics in American history.

Bret Lineberry ’11 found success in the post-graduate job search largely thanks to a valuable connection with a Hamilton alumnus. A May graduate with a degree in economics and world politics,  she’ll soon begin working in finance for General Electric in Atlanta.

While LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer) subjects are a hot topic, many people remain unaware of the experiences of this community.  LGBTQ sensitivity is a major issue for middle and high schools, colleges and universities, businesses and organizations around the country and many do not know where and how to start addressing these issues.  Recent graduate Megan Bolger '11 has founded an organization, Pride For All, in order to provide educational services and information on this topic.
