Researchers Examine Relationship Between Language and Citizenship

Learning English is one of the most daunting tasks for newly arriving immigrants in the United States, and it can be a task that is accompanied by little support. Anna Zahm’13, Grace Parker Zielinski ’14 and Melissa Segura ’14, have spent their summers working to combat this problem by providing much-needed assistance to English language adult students at the Utica access site for the Madison-Oneida Board of Cooperative Educational Services (BOCES).

Dean's Scholarly Achievement Awards Presented to Six Faculty Members

Six members of the Hamilton faculty were recognized for their research and creative successes with the Dean’s Scholarly Achievement Awards, presented by Dean of Faculty Patrick Reynolds at Class & Charter Day on Friday, May 4. The Awards recognize individual accomplishments, but reflect a richness and depth of scholarship and creative activity across the entire faculty.  The awards were made in three categories: Career Achievement, Early Career Achievement and Notable Year Achievement.

LaDousa Book Featured in InsideHigherEd

House Signs and Collegiate Fun, a book written by Associate Professor of Anthropology Chaise LaDousa, was the subject of an article in Monday’s issue of InsideHigherEd which included an interview with the author.  While in a visiting teaching position at Miami University of Ohio, LaDousa and his students analyzed the origins and meanings of house signs, complete with numerous interviews with residents of named off-campus houses.

Students Explore New Literacies for an Old City

Technological literacy is an invaluable personal skill in the information age, one that can open doors and allow individuals to escape the cyclical pattern of urban poverty. Chip Larsen ’13, Ana Baldrige ’12 and Paige Cross ’13 are spending their summer as Levitt Fellows with Associate Professor of Anthropology Chaise LaDousa on a project called “New Literacies for an Old City,” a reference to the social and economic landscape in the city of Utica.
