ACC Students Visit Ancient Starting Point of the Silk Road
Along with classmates from more than 20 other colleges and universities, Hamilton students currently studying abroad with the Associated Colleges in China (ACC) program recently traveled to Xi’an, one of the four ancient capitals of China. In addition to viewing the Terracotta Warriors, one of China’s most famous attractions, students also had the chance to explore the Muslim Quarter, an area of the city made distinctive more than 1000 years ago by Xi’an’s status as the eastern starting point of the Silk Road. Professor of Chinese De Bao Xu assumed the editorship of Journal of Technology and Chinese Language Teaching in October. The journal is published twice a year and is affiliated with the organization of Technology and Chinese Language Teaching. Professor of Chinese Hong Gang Jin gave a workshop on CFL Classroom Elicitation and Teachers' Questioning Strategies at Arizona State University on Sept. 18. The workshop was jointly sponsored by ASU's Chinese Language Flagship Program, the ASU Chinese Program, the ASU Confucius Institute, and the Chinese School of Greater Phoenix Area. More ...

Students Experience Rural China in ACC Field Studies Program
Hamilton students Ashley Chang ’10, Chelsea Stone ’10 and John Garrison ’10, along with 13 other students selected nationally, were awarded grants to participate in Associated Colleges in China (ACC) Field Studies program this summer. The program’s purpose was to help students who have previously studied abroad in a language-intensive program in China retain their high level of Chinese ability. It also aimed to help American students develop a better understanding of rural China and the China that is situated “outside of study-abroad programs.” For seniors Chang, Stone and Garrison, this seemed like a deal too good to be true.

Jin Presents Paper and Chairs Panel at International Conference
Professor of Chinese Hong Gang Jin presented a paper and chaired a panel at the 9th International Conference of Chinese Scholars Association on Teaching Chinese as a Second Language in December. Her paper was titled "Task complexity and its effect on triggering negotiation of meaning" and the panel she chaired was on Second Language Research and Pedagogical Innovation.
