Project Caps Busy Time for Physical Plant

The summer is always a busy time for construction on the Hill. Among many other projects around the campus such as repaired lights and ceilings, coated decks, replaced doors and constructed parking lots, the Sadove Student Center at Emerson Hall is complete. The crew opened the hall’s doors to the public on July 26. An official dedication will take place during Fallcoming weekend, Oct. 7-10.

New Student Center Will Be at the Heart of Campus

Visitors to campus these days will be able to get a good sense of what the renovated Emerson Hall is going to look like when it's christened as the new student center in July. “We’re on schedule. A couple weeks of good weather have been huge,” said project manager Bill Huggins, associate director of Physical Plant (the Construction branch).

But while many understand that the general goal is to overhaul the ELS building, fewer people are familiar with the detailed changes that are being implemented. Now that most Hamilton College students have left campus for the summer, the bulldozers, dump trucks and front-loaders have moved in. Even in a down economy, Hamilton will invest, on average, in excess of $1 million per month for the next year in construction projects.

Higher Retention Rate Creates Need for Space

With Hamilton's already high rate of student retention increasing still further, part of a trustee's new $1 million donation is being used to increase the College's housing capacity. Hamilton plans to use approximately two-thirds of the gift from 1971 graduate and Vice Chairman of the Board of Trustees Jeff Little to convert four first-floor lounges in the Bundy East and West Residence Halls into apartment-style residences for a total of 16 students

A second anonymous donor has recently stepped forward with a million-dollar gift to Hamilton College, this time to replace the field at Steuben Field with an artificial grass surface. The college's Board of Trustees approved moving ahead with the project once all funding is secured.

With all but a small portion of the $10.7 million project cost in hand and considering the significant savings in construction costs due to the current recession, Hamilton College's Board of Trustees has authorized the renovation and expansion of Emerson Hall into a new student center.
