Recently, as part of the curriculum for the Chinese 495 Practicum of Chinese Language and Culture five Chinese concentrators ventured down to the bottom of the Hill to teach class at Clinton Elementary School.  The program, which collaborates with the Oneida-Herkimer-Madison Board of Cooperative Educational Services (BOCES), is funded through a U.S. Department of Education Foreign Language Assistance Program (FLAP) grant with Professor of Chinese De Bao Xu.

De Bao Xu, the Leonard C. Ferguson Professor of East Asian Languages and Literatures, was appointed as the chair of the nomination committee of the Chinese Language Teachers Association (CLTA).

Dean of Faculty Patrick D. Reynolds announced the appointment of eight Hamilton faculty members to endowed chairs. All were effective July 1.

Professor of Chinese De Bao Xu edited and published a book, Technology and Chinese Language Teaching, with China Social Sciences Press, (May 2012). The book is a collection of 23 articles selected from the papers at the 6th and the 7th International Conference and Workshops on Technology and Chinese Language Teaching in the 21st Century.

Professor of Chinese De Bao Xu organized the Seventh International Conference and Workshops on Technology and Chinese Language Teaching in the 21st Century (TCLT7) held May 25-27 at the University of Hawaii at Manoa (UHM). Co-sponsored by Hamilton College and UHM, the main themes of the conference were cloud computing and mobile technology and their application to technology-based language instruction.

Professor of Chinese De Bao Xu chaired and was a discussant on a panel titled “The teaching and acquisition of Chinese vocabulary and characters-discussions in a modern context” on March 17 at the Annual Meeting of Association of Asian Studies (AAS) in Toronto.

Professor of Chinese De Bao Xu published the article “The Evaluation of Web Participatory Learning Tools and the Criteria for Selecting Virtual Classroom Software” in Journal of Technology and Chinese Language Teaching, Vol. 2, No. 2, December 2011, P. 1-22.

Professor of Chinese De Bao Xu edited a special issue of the Journal of Technology and Chinese Language Teaching and attended the executive board of directors meeting at the annual conference of Chinese Language Teachers Association in Denver.

Professor of Chinese De Bao Xu gave the keynote speech at the 47th International Conference on Elementary Chinese Education (ICECE) held July 20-22 at the University of Zhengzhou Normal University, Henan Province, China. Xu’s address focused on macro Chinese education.

De Bao Xu, professor of Chinese, was invited to give a talk at ICICE7, the 7th International Conference on Internet Chinese Education,  in Taipei, Taiwan, June 17-19. His talk was titled “The Participatory and Interactive Online Tools and the Standards to Choose Virtual Classroom Software.”
