The event at the Racquet and Tennis Club was moderated by Susan Skerritt K’77, P’11,  of The Bank of New York Mellon. Panelists include Harold Bogle ’75, P’14, Credit Suisse; Andrew Taylor ’88, JP Morgan Chase Co.; and Jennifer Murphy Hill ’87,  Bank of America Merrill Lynch.

On September 21, students in Hamilton's New York City program visited the Barclays Capital building for a discussion hosted by Hamilton alumni George Mack ’93 and Alexandra Leighton ’09. Barclays Capital, located on 49th Street and 7th Avenue, is one of the world’s premier investment banks.

An article co-authored by Associate Professor of Economics Stephen Wu was published in the October issue of The Journal of Socio-Economics. “Fatalism and Savings,” written with Joel Shapiro of the University of Oxford, examines the impact of fatalism on the decision of whether or not to save.

Entrepreneurship among immigrants to the U.S. has a significant impact on the economy’s growth. Yet many economists don't study this particular facet of economic development in detail. Noah Ford ’13, a recipient of a 2011 Levitt Research Fellowship Grant, is exploring immigrant entrepreneurship with Professor of Economics Paul Hagstrom.

“Assessing Mondragon: Stability & Managed Change in the Face of Globalization,” a paper co-authored by Derek Jones, the Irma M. and Robert D. Morris Professor of Economics, has been published as a chapter in Employee Ownership and Shared Capitalism: New Directions in Research.

In advance of the Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke’s appearance before the House Financial Services Committee today, Henry Platt Bristol Professor of Economics Ann Owen discussed the state of the economy, the European debt crisis and public expectations related to his testimony with American Public Media’s Marketplace reporter David Gura. The segment, titled “Bernanke heads to Capitol Hill,” was broadcast on July 13 on Marketplace Morning Report.

Associate Professor of Economics Stephen Wu presented a paper and was a discussant of another paper at the Western Economic Association Annual Meeting, held in San Diego from June 30-July 2.  His paper titled "Are Pregnant Women Happier? Racial Differences in the Relationship Between Pregnancy and Life Satisfaction was part of a panel titled "The Economics of Happiness."

The Great Recession left a deep mark on the American economy, most notably on the labor market. While this market is recovering, progress is very slow and many Americans remain in search of a job. Furthermore, current labor market trends are highly unexpected, leaving many economists looking for a definitive explanation. Mihai Dohotaru ’13, a recipient of a Summer Levitt Research Fellowship Grant, will work toward the answer with Professor of Economics Christophre Georges over the course of his project “The Housing Bubble and the U.S. Labor Market after the ‘Great Recession.’”
