Hechinger Report Interviews Chambliss

The Hechinger Report, a nonprofit news organization focused on producing in-depth education journalism, published an interview with Daniel Chambliss, the Eugene M. Tobin Distinguished Professor of Sociology, on May 17.  “Q&A with Dan Chambliss: A successful college education can come down to a single conversation” focused on the Mellon Foundation-funded longitudinal study initiated by Chambliss in 2001. The article reviewed some of the study results, which will be included in a forthcoming book titled How College Works, and what implications the results might have for U.S. higher education.

Yu '12 Investigates Methods to Learn Chinese

Learning a second language is undoubtedly a challenging undertaking, and the pedagogical methods involved in teaching a second language can make the process easier or more difficult for students.  Linda Yu ’12 will spend this summer with Professor Hong Gang Jin, the William R. Kenan Professor of East Asian Languages, testing different pedagogical methods for teaching Chinese. Their project, “Attention to What? An Investigation on the Linkage Between Attention and Input,” is funded by an Emerson Summer Grant.

Doug Lemov '90 visited campus on Oct. 4 to speak to several of Susan Mason's education classes and give a public lecture. Lemov, who graduated from Hamilton with plans of becoming a teacher, taught for several years at a public high school in Princeton, N.J., before deciding that he wanted to be involved in education at the highest level. Hamilton was well-represented at the Northeast Regional Association of Experiential Education (AEE) Conference held April 23-25 at Camp Kieve in Nobleboro, Maine. The annual conference is attended by classroom educators, corporate trainers, outdoor and environmental education leaders and others interested in incorporating experiential education into their professions. Mason Delivers Virtual Online Training for AMA

During 2010 Susan Mason is acting as the subject matter expert and instructor for a series of live, instructor-led virtual lessons in workplace communications for the American Management Association. Using the Adobe Connect platform, Mason uses online real time chat, voiceover Internet protocols, slides, polls and white board applications to deliver her lessons. Mason is director of the College’s Education Studies program.
