A Fire In My Belly to be Screened

February 22, 2011 

Hamilton’s Emerson Gallery, in conjunction with the college’s art department, will screen David Wojnarowicz’s 1989 film, A Fire In My Belly, on Wednesday, Feb. 23, at 5 p.m. in the Kirner-Johnson Building’s Red Pit (Room 127). A panel discussion will follow. Both events are free and open to the public.

Emerson Gallery Lends to Guggenheim in Venice

February 3, 2011 

Works from Hamilton’s art collection are currently on view at the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice, Italy, as part of the exhibition, The Vorticists: Rebel Artists in London and New York, 1914-1918. The Emerson Gallery lent four paintings by English artist Dorothy Shakespear (1886-1973), wife of Ezra Pound, Class of 1905, to the exhibition

Art Department and Emerson Gallery Host Sonsini

Hamilton College’s Emerson Gallery will host an opening reception on Wednesday, Jan. 26, at 4:15 pm for three new exhibits featuring eccentric views of men and women in photography, drawing, and painting. Rome native John Sonsini will present a gallery conversation sponsored by the art department. The reception and program are free and open to the public.

Emerson Gallery Presents the Art of Sand Mandala

October 5, 2010 

On Monday, Oct. 4, nine Buddhist monks from the Gaden Shartse Monastery in Southern India performed an opening consecration ceremony of sacred dance and chanting in the Emerson Gallery atrium before beginning their creation of a sand mandala of compassion. This ancient tradition is a reminder of the Buddhist concept of impermanence.

Emerson Gallery Presents Exhibitions on Art and Religion

The Emerson Gallery will present a trio of exhibitions that examine definitions of religious art, what makes images religious and what happens when objects leave an artist’s studio or their spiritual context and become “property” of the community. The exhibitions will be on view Sept. 13 – Jan. 2 and will feature a range of works from different cultures and historic periods, including works from the Emerson Gallery collection and the Burke Library special collections.  More ...

Emerson Gallery Art Invitational 2010 Opens June 3

June 1, 2010 
The Emerson Gallery Student Art Invitational 2010, features artwork from 15 students who recently completed courses in the visual arts at Hamilton College and celebrates their creativity. The exhibition includes photography, video, sculpture, drawing and painting ranging from introductory to advanced academic levels. The Emerson Gallery Student Art Invitational 2010 will be open through the summer and will close Tuesday, Aug. 31. It is free and open to the public. More ...

Senior Art Show 2010 on Exhibit at Emerson Gallery

Senior Art Show 2010, a presentation of works created by 10 art majors, will open at the Emerson Gallery on Friday, April 30. An opening reception will be held from 4-6 p.m. The exhibition runs through Saturday, May 22, and is free and open to the public. Composer Samuel Pellman Discusses Collaboration With Miranda Raimondi '08

Samuel Pellman, the Leonard C. Ferguson Professor of Music, presented his composition NGC 2080, Variation 2 at the Emerson Gallery on Feb. 18 as part of the Gallery’s “Look Up” exhibition. Pellman’s piece, which was accompanied by a video created by his collaborator Miranda Raimondi '08, combines unique and innovative sounds with beautiful and meaningful images. More ...
