Six members of the Hamilton faculty were recognized for their research and creative successes with the Dean’s Scholarly Achievement Awards, presented by Dean of Faculty Patrick Reynolds at Class & Charter Day on Friday, May 4. The Awards recognize individual accomplishments, but reflect a richness and depth of scholarship and creative activity across the entire faculty. The awards were made in three categories: Career Achievement, Early Career Achievement and Notable Year Achievement.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in Hollywood has named Visiting Professor of Art History Scott MacDonald an Academy Scholar for 2012. Each year the Academy chooses two scholars nationwide, awarding each a grant to pursue a research project.

Associate Professor of Art Ella Gant was named a 2011 Fellow in digital/electronic arts by the New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA). NYFA awarded $728,000 in unrestricted cash grants of $7,000 to 105 artists throughout New York State. Fellows were selected from a pool of 3,692 applicants in the categories of crafts/sculpture; digital/electronic work; non-fiction literature; printmaking/drawing/book arts, and poetry.

Frank Anechiarico '71, the Maynard-Knox Professor of Government and Law, was presented with the Sidney Wertimer Award by the Student Assembly.

Torchbearers of of Democracy: African American Soldiers in the World War I Era by Associate Professor of History Chad L. Williams has been selected by the Organization of American Historians (OAH) for the 2011 Liberty Legacy Foundation Award which is given annually for the best book on any aspect of the struggle for civil rights in the United State. Williams’ book was also selected by the Society for Military History to receive its 2011 Distinguished Book Award for United States History.

Hamilton College Visiting Assistant Professor of English Jane Springer has been named one of 10 recipients of the 2010 Whiting Writers’ Award by the Mrs. Giles Whiting Foundation. The awards of $50,000 each have been given annually since 1985 to writers of exceptional talent and promise in early career.
