Visiting Associate Professor of Religious Studies S. Brent Plate presented the AAR Award in Religion and the Arts to Pulitzer Prize-winning author and poet Gary Snyder at the annual meeting of the American Academy of Religion (AAR) Nov. 18-22 in San Francisco.

Professor of Mathematics Debra Boutin was recently elected as an officer of the Discrete Math Activity Group of the Society of Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM).

Associate Professor of Hispanic Studies Joana Sabadell-Nieto has published a book titled Desbordamientos: Transformaciones culturales y políticas de las  mujeres (Overflowings: Cultural and Political Transformations by Women). The result of nearly a decade of research, the book is part of Icaria/Akademia’s “Women and Culture” collection and will be presented in Barcelona later in the month.

Maurice Isserman, the James L. Ferguson Professor of History, was quoted in a Nov. 27 Chronicle of Higher Education article about a national campaign of student debt refusal. In “Debt Protesters Denounce Colleges for Broken Promises,” Isserman said the Occupy Wall Street movement has rubbed off on college students, who have taken the protest in their own direction.

William R. Kenan Professor of East Asian Languages and Literature Hong Gang Jin and Lian Xue, teaching fellow in Chinese, presented a paper at the annual American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages/Chinese Language Teachers Association (ACTFL/CLTA) conference on Nov. 18 in Denver.

Hamilton President Joan Hinde Stewart was among participants in the Association of Yale Alumni annual assembly on Nov. 17.   Stewart, who received her Ph.D. from Yale in 1970, was a panelist on “Doctorates Without Borders,” a discussion of the challenges facing graduate school alumni in the 21st century and leadership opportunities within and beyond academia for Ph.D. degree recipients.

Stone Professor of Psychology Douglas Weldon presented a poster titled “Visual Cortical Evoked Potentials During and After MK-801 Administration in Rats” at the annual meeting of the Society for Neuroscience on Nov. 16 in Washington, D.C.

Professor of Art History Rand Carter was honored with a Distinguished Service/Lifetime Achievement Award by the Landmarks Society of Greater Utica at its annual meeting and banquet on Nov. 17.

Assistant Professor of Chemistry Adam Van Wynsberghe was a contributing author of a paper published in the Oct. 25 issue of the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America. (PNAS)

Elihu Root Peace Fund Visiting Professor of Women’s Studies Michele Paludi co-edited a book set titled Women and Mental Disorders. The four-volume set brings together recent research and theories to discuss women and mental disorders from a feminist perspective and was co-edited with Kevin Nadal of John Jay College of Criminal Justice and Paula Lundberg-Love of the University of Texas, Tyler.
