Austin Walker ’12 has been awarded a Fulbright Grant to Kenya. He will spend the 2012-13 academic year working on his project “Kenyan Youth Development: Youth as Kenya’s Development Architects” in Nyanza Province of western Kenya. Walker will rejoin the Lwala Community Alliance staff and director Robert Kasabala to build upon the baseline study about youth perspectives on development that they conducted last summer.

Alexander Benkhart ’11 has been awarded a Fulbright Grant to Japan. He will spend the 2011-12 academic year studying depictions of homosexuality in Japanese popular culture, and the relationship between the concepts expressed in popular culture and the identity politics of the Japanese gay rights movement. As an integral part of his research, he will continue to engage in intensive language study to familiarize himself with the vocabulary and methods of expressing and describing sexuality in the Japanese language.

Erica Kowsz, a candidate for May graduation from Hamilton, has been awarded a Fulbright Grant to Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. She will spend the 2011-12 academic year conducting fieldwork among the Sinixt First Nation in the Slocan Valley. Kowsz will produce an ethnographic film exploring the connections between indigenous conceptions of past, place and identity and how these understandings relate to archaeology.

More ...Charlotte Hickey ’11 has been awarded a Fulbright grant to Germany. She will spend the 2011-12 academic year at Ludwig-Maximilians –Universitat of Munich, researching the roles of nurses at former euthanasia site Kaufbeuren and their transition back into German society. She hopes to understand the impact of outside forces on the evolution of post-war German society and in particular the role of the early encounters between Germans and Americans and will investigate their initial interactions.
