On Saturday, Jan. 22, more than 120 students gathered for Hamilton’s 13th annual Martin Luther King Jr. Service Day. The community service event, run by the Hamilton Association for Volunteering, Outreach and Charity, or HAVOC, sent students to a wide variety of locations across the Utica area, from the Kirkland Town Library to Lutheran Home for the elderly to the Rome Humane Society.

Passing by Utica’s Salvation Army on a Thursday evening, one might assume a carnival is taking place behind its doors. Crashing cymbals, the occasional crack of a snare drum and muddled piano melodies can be heard from the Salvation Army’s chapel, their sounds pouring out into the street. Campus service organization Hamilton Association for Volunteering, Outreach, and Charity (HAVOC) is sponsoring its traditional mitten tree and will make the holidays a bit cheerier for many children. The students spent the afternoon volunteering at 10 area non-profit organizations including For the Good, Hope House, The Neighborhood Center and the Rome Humane Society.
