Students came back from spring break to some good news concerning sustainability on the Hill. Hamilton was the winner of the three-week NY Negawatt/CCN Competition Challenge among New York Six Liberal Arts Consortium peer schools.  The student body, led by Hamilton Environmental Action Group (HEAG) reduced electricity consumption across all Hamilton residence halls by 5.8%, which equates to 27,909 kilowatt hours or approximately $2,500.

Clothing constructed of everything from banana peels and straws to garbage bags and recyclable bottles hit the runway as the Recycling Task Force hosted Hamilton’s first “Trashion Show” on March 3. The show was part of Recyclemania, an eight-week program that encourages student to reevaluate their waste and improve recycling.

The Hamilton Environmental Action Group (HEAG) is holding its annual Green Week celebration from April 22-27. Green Week is designed to promote sustainability and campus engagement in conservation efforts, and will feature daily events open to the entire Hamilton community.

Hamilton’s annual “Do it in the Dark” Dorm Energy Battle is in its final stretch. The campus-wide competition between residence halls began Feb. 13 and will end March 5. The residence hall that reduces its energy consumption the most will win a weekend breakfast catered by Bon Appétit.

A screening and discussion of the documentary, Mine Your Own Business, will take place on Tuesday, Nov. 8, at 7:30 p.m. in the Red Pit, KJ.  Mine Your Own Business examines the controversial Rosia Montana mining project in Romania in 2007. The event is free and open to the public.

Not to be outdone by HAVOC and its Make a Difference Day, the Hamilton Environmental Action Group (HEAG) took a trip on Sept. 10 to the Sterling Nature Center on Lake Ontario to participate with other local activists in Sterling’s annual Beach Clean-up Day.

Hamilton Environmental Action Group (HEAG) is inviting the Hamilton community to join together to celebrate the Earth and make a difference during Green Week, which kicks off on Monday, April 18, and will continue through next weekend. Green Week is HEAG’s biggest project of the semester, and will feature at least one new event every day.

On Friday Nov. 5, Hamilton College students will have a chance to connect with the largest social movement in history: the movement for a thriving, just, sustainable world. The multi-part event, "Soul Purpose," is designed to help students unleash their generation’s potential to determine what kind of world will be left for the next millennium. The event begins at 7 p.m. in the Annex with free food from the Indian Cafe followed by Awakening the Dreamer at 7:30 p.m.
