WAMC/Northeast Public Radio in Albany will feature a reading by Associate Professor of History Chad Williams on Tuesday, Dec. 28, as part of the public radio station’s Academic Minute. The program airs each weekday at 7:37 a.m. and 3:56 p.m. at 90.3 FM in the Clinton.

James L. Ferguson Professor of History Maurice Isserman was presented with the University of Rochester’s Andrew Eiseman Writer’s Award for Fallen Giants: A History of Himalayan Mountaineering from the Age of Empire to the Age of Extremes on Dec. 10, in Rochester. Isserman and co-writer Stewart Weaver of the University of Rochester will share the award and its $1,000 prize.

Associate Professor of History Chad Williams recently presented his work at several recent major national conferences. On Oct. 1 Williams chaired and participated in a roundtable discussion on “African Americans and World War I in History, Memory and Culture,” at the annual meeting of the Association for the Study of African American Life and History in Raleigh, N.C.

The Oxford Handbook of Slavery in the Americas, co-edited by Publius Virgilius Rogers Professor of American History Robert L. Paquette and Mark M. Smith of the University of South Carolina, has been published by Oxford University Press.

An interview with James L. Ferguson Professor of History Maurice Isserman has been published in Grasping for Heaven: Interviews with North American Mountaineers by Frederic Hartemann and Robert Hauptman.

Anthony Grafton, Henry Putnam University Professor of History at Princeton University, will present the Doris M. and Ralph E. Hansmann Lecture on Thursday, Nov. 11, at 4:10 p.m., in the Science Center’s Kennedy Auditorium. The lecture, titled “The Fall and Rise of Sacred History in Early Modern Europe” is free and open to the public.

Francis (Cisco) R. Bradley, postdoctoral fellow in Asian studies and visiting assistant professor of history, presented a paper titled "The Patani Knowledge Network and the Rise of Islamic Educational Institutions in Southeast Asia," at the American Academy of Religion annual meeting, Oct. 30-Nov. 1.

Thom Rath, Mellon Postdoctoral Fellow and visiting assistant professor of history, gave two papers in October. At the conference of the Latin American Studies Association in Toronto, he presented research examining the effects of military reform on gender roles and state legitimacy in Mexico in the 1930s and 40s. This paper contributes to larger debates about the effects of the Revolution of 1910-20 on gender, and the limits of postrevolutionary demilitarization.

Maurice Isserman, the James L. Ferguson Professor of History, has published a review of two new books about Henry Hudson, Douglas Hunter’s Half Moon: Henry Hudson and the Voyage that Redrew the Map of the New World and Fatal Journey: The Final Expedition of Henry Hudson by Peter C. Mancall. Isserman’s article, “Dead Reckoning: The Mysterious Henry Hudson,” appears in the September issue of Reviews in American History.

Associate Professor of History Chad Williams is the author of a new book, Torchbearers of Democracy, published by The University of North Carolina Press (Oct., 2010).
