Immediately after Federal Reserve policymakers announced a plan to pump more money into the economy with a policy known as "quantitative easing," Ann Owen, the Henry Platt Bristol Professor of Economics and director of the Arthur Levitt Public Affairs Center, spoke with a National Public Radio (NPR) reporter about possible outcomes. The interview was part of a segment broadcast on NPR’s All Things Considered program  on Nov. 3 titled “Fed To Buy $600 Billion In Treasury Bonds.”

Hamilton Featured in New York Times Article

The Hamilton community and the college’s Entrepreneurship Club were at the center of a New York Times article titled “In a Digital Age, Students Still Cling to Paper Textbooks” in which the college was described as “a poster-perfect liberal arts school.” Focused on the cost of textbooks, the article highlighted the club’s successful efforts to create getmytextbooks.org, a site on which students can sell or rent their textbooks to other students while effectively eliminating costs associated with middlemen.

Owen Interviewed on Marketplace

Professor of Economics Ann Owen, along with the chief fixed income strategist at Morgan Stanley, was interviewed on American Public Media’s Marketplace about the decisions the Federal Reserve might make on interest rates and the possible effects these decisions might have on inflation rates. The syndicated program was broadcast across the nation on public radio stations on Oct. 15.

WAMC/Northeast Public Radio in Albany will feature a reading by Visiting Associate Professor of Religious Studies S. Brent Plate on Tuesday, Oct. 19, as part of the public radio station’s Academic Minute. The new program airs each weekday at 7:37 a.m. and 3:56 p.m. on 90.3 FM in the Clinton area. Plate’s topic addresses the persistence of myth.

WAMC/Northeast Public Radio in Albany will feature a reading by Professor of Government and Director of the Public Policy Program P. Gary Wyckoff on Thursday, Oct. 7, as part of the public radio station’s Academic Minute. The program normally airs each weekday at 7:37 a.m. and 3:56 p.m at 90.3 FM in the Clinton area but because WAMC is in its fall fund drive, the Academic Minute will not air at its usual times. Instead, it will be played as a floating module throughout the day.

Robert Simon, the Marjorie and Robert W. McEwen Professor of Philosophy, was interviewed for a Los Angeles Times article about truthfulness in golf. In “Honesty Suits Golf to a Tee” (9/26/10), the writer reports that 14-year-old Zach Nash is returning the first-place medal he won at a tournament in August after he realized he inadvertently played the match with an illegal number of clubs in his bag. USA Today Includes Fast-a-thon in Education Blog

In her education blog on the USA Today website, Mary Beth Marklein reported on how some colleges have promoted religious and cultural awareness “even before Florida preacher Terry Jones announced plans to burn the Quran this weekend.” Included in a summary of how “colleges have been seeking ways to counter anti-Muslim sentiment on campus and promote understanding of religious and cultural diversity” was a description of Hamilton’s recent fast-a-thon in which 170 Muslim and non-Muslim students participated in a fast and post-fast dinner. One of the reasons for holding the annual event is to offer non-Muslim students the opportunity to experience what Muslims practice for an entire month. More ...

Ma Rainey Scores Three Stars in Edinburgh

Hamilton’s student production of Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival received a three star rating in Edinburgh Festival Magazine. The cast performed August Wilson's Ma Rainey for Hamilton’s annual Martin Luther King Day celebration in January, and took the show to Edinburgh on Aug. 11-22. It was directed by Associate Professor of Theatre Mark Cryer. More ...
