Hamilton’s highest awards for teaching were presented on May 4 to five faculty members. Ian Rosenstein,Christopher Vasantkumar, Andrew Dykstra, Heather Buchman and Patty Kloidt were honored at the Class & Charter Day ceremony.

Robert Kantrowitz ’82, professor and chair of mathematics, was the invited speaker at the induction ceremony for Pi Mu Epsilon and Tau Sigma Kappa on April 26 at Manhattan College in New York City.

The Hamilton Mathematics Department hosted the spring 2012 meeting of the Seaway Section of the Mathematical Association of America (MAA) on April 13 and 14.

Professor of Mathematics Debra Boutin and Associate Professor of Mathematics Sally Cockburn published their joint work "Posets of Geometric Graphs" in Ars Mathematica Contemporanea.

Students from the Hamilton Mathletics team won first place in the annual Snow Bowl competition, edging out teams from Colgate University, Skidmore College and Saint Lawrence University.  To determine the winner, each team in the competition added their top five scores on the William Lowell Putnam Exam. 

Professor of Mathematics Debra Boutin gave a research talk at the American Mathematical Society Southeastern Section Meeting at the University of South Florida in Tampa, Fla., on March 11. In this talk, Boutin described a set of vertices that can be used to remove all symmetries from a network and presented new results on the size of such sets in some well-known network families.

Professor of Mathematics Richard Bedient presented a talk on the Hamilton College Mathematics Senior Seminar Program at the Annual Mathematics Meetings in Boston in January.  The talk was part of a session on “Capstone Courses” and described the Hamilton seminar program as a whole, but focused on the Seminar in Topology which Bedient has taught for many years.

Professor of Mathematics Debra Boutin and Associate Professor of Mathematics Sally Cockburn recently published their joint work "Geometric Graph Homomorphisms" in the Journal of Graph Theory.

In the hours before a math assignment is due at Hamilton, students can be seen sitting around professors’ offices and spanning the nearby hallway. Collaboration is encouraged, and so they seek help from one another and from their professor to finish up the homework. The work is not easy, but the sense of accomplishment upon handing in each assignment is fulfilling.
