Hamilton will host its inaugural undergraduate philosophy conference, “Philosophy of Film and Television,” on Friday, May 3, beginning at 10 a.m., in Dwight Lounge, Bristol Center. The conference is sponsored by the Philosophy Department and the Danny Kaleikini Foundation, and is free and open to the public.

Scott Kretchmar, professor of exercise and sport science at Penn State University, will present a lecture titled “Joe Paterno: Assessment of a Legacy,” on Sunday, April 28, at 7:30 p.m., in the Kirner-Johnson Building’s Bradford Auditorium. His lecture is sponsored by the Hamilton College philosophy department, and is free and open to the public.

Heather Reid, an expert on the philosophical foundations of the Olympic Games, will present a lecture titled “Athletics and Philosophy in Ancient Greece: The Ethics of Excellence,” on Monday, April 22, at 7:30 p.m., in the Kennedy Auditorium, Taylor Science Center. Her lecture is sponsored by the philosophy department and is free and open to the public.

Associate Professor of Philosophy Katheryn Doran has been appointed to the American Philosophical Association’s (APA)  Committee on the Teaching of Philosophy, beginning on July 1, 2013 and ending June 30, 2016.

An article by Martin Shuster titled "Language and Loneliness: Arendt, Cavell, and Modernity" was recently published in the International Journal of Philosophical Studies (120:4).  He is the Truax Postdoctoral Fellow in Philosophy and visiting assistant professor of philosophy.

What We Mean by Experience by Professor of Philosophy Marianne Janack was recently published by Stanford University Press.

Assistant Professor of Philosophy Russell Marcus presented “How to Sit in the Back of the Class, Or How a Control Freak Ceded Some Control Over His Philosophy Classroom” on July 27 at the 19th Biennial International Workshop-Conference of the American Association of Philosophy Teachers (AAPT) at St. Edward’s University in Austin, Texas.

Martin Shuster, Truax Postdoctoral Fellow in Philosophy and visiting assistant professor of philosophy, was selected to participate in a 10-day summer seminar called "Stakes of Speech," which focused on philosophy of language and the work of Ludwig Wittgenstein, Stanley Cavell and Rush Rhees.

Mysticism, or the study of individuals who seek to access a higher-than-sensory reality, is a relatively abstract topic of study, but Sean Fujimori ’14 is hoping to bring the teachings and ancient traditions of the mystics into modern society. Fujimori is pursuing his study on mysticism with an Emerson Foundation Summer Research Grant under the guidance of John Stewart Kennedy Professor of Philosophy Richard Werner.

Martin Shuster, Truax Postdoctoral Fellow in Philosophy and visiting assistant professor of philosophy, presented a paper to the 12th annual Levinas Research Seminar (LRS) meeting, which took place July 6-7 at the University of Nevada, Reno.
