Five Hamilton students who spent the summer working in science-related internships had the opportunity to share information on their experiences in the first event in a new Career Center series on Sept. 24.

Biochemistry major Kailee Williams ’13 has been considereing a career in dentistry since she entered Hamilton. Although dental school is only a few years away, she decided to get some early career-related experience by interning at the dental offices of Dr. Cheryl Reygers in Homer, N.Y. Williams received a stipend from the Jeffery Fund in Science.

According to The Wall Street Journal’s June Marketwatch.com analysis, healthcare job openings will grow faster than any other industry in 46 out of the 50 states. Shoichi Sato ’13 plans to take advantage of this trend –while at the same time help others – by pursuing a career in the field of healthcare consulting. Sato is preparing for his future career goals by interning at the Harvard School of Public Health as a research assistant.

Ian Nichols ’13 is having the experience of a lifetime as an intern for the international non-profit Bridges Across Borders in Jaque, Panama. Nichols is working as an English teacher and sea turtle conservationist in the rural village of Jaque, which is sandwiched between the Serranía del Bagre rainforest preserve and the Jaque beach on the Pacific Ocean. He describes his “office” as “a veranda overlooking the beach in the small cabin  in which I’m living.”

Max Vaickus ’12 had been coming to Hamilton long before his first year as a student on the Hill. For years, he would accompany his family each winter and summer to visit his brother Louis Vaickus ’05. The Hill’s stately buildings made an impression early on: “that’s what I thought a college was supposed to look like,” Vaickus remembers. When it was time to choose his own college, he too picked Hamilton. Now, he will soon begin a career as a medical assistant with the Boston Sports and Shoulder Center.

I decided to major in psychology at Hamilton because I was fascinated by the academic material.  When I declared my major as a sophomore, I didn't have any specific idea of how I might translate my academic training in psychology into a future career.  In fact, I had originally rejected the idea of pursuing a PhD in clinical psychology because I didn't think I was very interested in research and I thought the programs would be too competitive for me.

A career shadowing experience introduced Corinne to her dream job when she was a rising sophomore at Hamilton. Although the program she desired was not offered at a liberal arts college, Corinne was able to get on the fast-track to career success, and has been working as a nurse practitioner for five years.
