But the first step to finding a voice is confidence, and Katherine Costa ’12 is working with the ROSE Fund this summer to help women recover their self-esteem and take a stand against domestic violence. As an intern at the University of Chicago Medical Center, Kerry Nieman ’12 has the opportunity to observe a gynecological surgery. As the surgeon removes some tissue the omentum (a large fold of the peritoneum), Nieman takes it immediately to her lab station and begins to run experiments on it. Pablo Picasso once said, “Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life.” This summer, Eva Hunt ’11 is discovering how art is used cathartically, but for some heavier dust than Picasso’s; through internships with Project Create and The Smith Farm Center, Hunt is learning that art can be therapeutic for children and adults. Chopping vegetables, cooking meats and mixing dressings, Loren Ormeo ’11 is occupied with cooking a large meal. But instead of just cooking for her friends or family, Ormeo cooks for the needy: those whose life-threatening illnesses prevent them from shopping and cooking themselves.
