Mathletics Team Vies in Putnam Competition

December 8, 2011 

Ten students from Hamilton's Mathletics team competed nationally on Dec. 3, in the William Lowell Putnam mathematics competition.  The participants were Jeremy Adelman ’13, Abrar Ahmed ’13, Yinghan Ding ’12, Adam Fix ’13, Robert Huben ’15, Maribeth Johnson ’13, Sunrose Shrestha ’14, Josh Snyder ’13, Yonghun Song ’13 and Shichen Xu ’12. They had trained for the competition throughout the fall semester with Assistant Professor of Mathematics Andrew Dykstra.

Monetary Policy Students Advance to Final Round of Fed Challenge

Receive Honorable Mention and Special Award for Best Teamwork

November 18, 2011 

Students in Hamilton's Monetary Policy class traveled to the New York Federal Reserve Bank on Nov. 16 and competed in the semi-final round of the Fed Challenge in the morning, advancing to the final round in the afternoon.  They were awarded an Honorable Mention for their performance overall and were recognized with a special award for "best teamwork."

COOP Service Interns Gain Experience With Local Non-Profits

The men and women of Hamilton’s CSI team have some of the most specialized and important skills on campus. They’re not crime scene investigators, though—CSI stands for COOP Service Intern, one of the many service opportunities offered by Hamilton’s Community Opportunity and Outreach Project (COOP). Each year, a half-dozen first-year students join this selective program, which is focused on matching a student with a local non-profit agency for an extended four-semester internship.

Ten Seniors Elected to Phi Beta Kappa

Ten Hamilton seniors were elected to the Epsilon chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the nation’s oldest honor society, at a recent meeting. The inductees are Sarah Dreyer-Oren, Julia Litzky, Philip Lowrey, Steven Pet, Emily Potter, Hannah Schacter, Wei Shi, Jordyn Taylor, Shichen Xu and Jake Zappala.

Career Center's Peer Advisors Take on Expanded Role

Members of the Hamilton College community see tangible development on campus every day, especially, this year, while walking past the future site of the Wellin Museum of Art. Students with an ear to the ground may also witness steady internal rebuilding of campus institutions like the Career Center. This year, Career Center leaders are in the process of planning steps for the Center to become “best in class.” As one of their measures, they hope to expand the role of peer advisors.

Mock Trial Team Takes First at Colgate Tournament

November 8, 2011 

Hamilton’s Mock Trial team participated in the third annual Colgate Classic at Colgate University on Nov. 5 and 6 and finished in first place, continuing a series of strong performances in the tournament. Ian Thresher ’12, Marta Johnson ’13 and KT Stein ’14 won Outstanding Attorney awards and Emily Tompsett ’13 won an Outstanding Witness award.

From Nov. 7 through Nov. 13, the College honors Hamilton College Emergency Medical Services (HCEMS) for their unparalleled dedication to the campus community.

Model UN Participants Take Part in Boston Area Conference

October 25, 2011 

Ten Hamilton students traveled to Boston to participate in the Boston Area Model United Nations Conference hosted by Boston University.  The conference convened Oct. 20-23, and drew more than 200 delegates to fill a variety of panels.  Unlike many Model United Nations conferences, every committee functioned as a crisis committee in order to engage students and encourage them to find non-traditional solutions to pressing international crises.
