Got Calcium?

“Got milk?” For a group of Hamilton student researchers, the well-known slogan might be modified to “Got calcium?” The most abundant metal in our bodies and a valuable component of milk, calcium serves functions well beyond building strong teeth and bones. Hamilton research students, working with Douglas Weldon, the Stone Professor of Psychology, are examining how our mental processes depend on calcium.  The compound performs lesser known, but essential, roles in blood clotting, chemical signaling and action potential firing.  More ...

Roommates Run 13.1 and Then Some

On the morning of Sunday, June 9, Deanna Nappi ’15 and Kerri Grimaldi ’15 took a break from their typical routines.  The two Hamilton students traveled to the Adirondack region to participate in the ninth annual Lake Placid Marathon.  After selecting a lengthy playlist from their iPods and a pre-race warm up, the two women did not stop running until they crossed the finish line.  More ...

Students Awarded Prizes, Scholarships at Class & Charter Day

Academic achievement prizes, prize scholarships and other recognition of student accomplishments were awarded at Hamilton’s 63rd annual Class & Charter Day convocation on Monday, May 13, in the Chapel. Among the top prizes Nicholas Solano ’14 was awarded the Milton F. Fillius Jr. /Joseph Drown Prize Scholarship, and Susannah Parkin ’13 was named the recipient of the James Soper Merrill Prize.  More ...

Members of the Hamilton’s men’s basketball team and coach Adam Stockwell dished out an assist as they volunteered with the 5th annual Intergenerational Clean-up on April 21. Armed with rakes and garbage bags the team cleaned up the yard of some New York Mills senior citizens.  More ...

Behind the Scenes Wins 24-Hour-Film Fest

On April 12 at midnight the Hamilton College Film Production Guild ran its spring semester 24-Hour Film Festival. Taylor Coe ’13, the president of the Guild, along with Kayla Safran ’13 and Evan Van Tassell ’13 organized the event. Nine teams initially signed up, and four films were completed and submitted by the deadline.  More ...

Michael Breslin’13 has been awarded Hamilton’s prestigious Bristol Fellowship. Breslin, a theater major, will undertake a project titled “Gender Play: Displaying, Transgressing, and Transcending Gender Identity in World Theatre,” and travel to Germany, Poland, Australia, Indonesia and Japan.  More ...

COOP Senior Fellows Manage Philanthropic Events On- and Off-Campus

Look at campus e-mail on any given day during Hamilton’s academic year and chances are there’s a service opportunity seeking volunteers. The people behind these numerous events are the Community Outreach and Opportunities Program (COOP) Senior Fellows – Danielle Lashley, Ramya Ramnath and Amy Soenksen. They coordinate volunteer requests with local non-profits, plan events and organize volunteers.  More ...

Denise Ghartey '12 is Bristol Fellowship Recipient

Denise Ghartey ’12 has been awarded Hamilton’s Bristol Fellowship. The Bristol Fellowship was begun in 1996 as part of a gift to the college by William M. Bristol Jr., (Class of 1917).  The $22,000 fellowship is designed to encourage Hamilton students to experience the richness of the world by living outside the United States for one year and studying an area of great personal interest.  More ...
