Edward North Professor of Classics Barbara Gold gave a paper at the annual meeting of the American Philological Association in San Antonio on Jan. 8. Her paper, "Teaching Ancient Comedy: Race Matters," was part of a panel on "Teaching Uncomfortable Subjects in the Classics Classroom."

Associate Professor of Russian John Bartle was recently honored by The American Association of Teachers of Slavic and East European Languages (AATSEEL) for Distinguished Service to AATSEEL 2011. Bartle has served as associate editor for book reviews for the Slavic and East European Journal since its fall 2001 issue.

Two papers by Assistant Professor of Economics Emily Conover, “Manipulation of Social Program Eligibility: Detection, Explanations and Consequences for Empirical Research” and “Effects of Colombia's Social Protection System on Workers' Choice between Formal and Informal Employment,” were presented at the American Economic Association meeting held Jan. 6-9, in Denver.

James S. Sherman Professor of Government Philip Klinkner and Jesse Stinebring ’13 presented a paper at the Southern Political Science Association meeting held Jan. 6-8, in New Orleans. “Black, White, and Green: Race and Campaign Spending in the 2008 Election” examines the role of race resentment in recent elections and whether Barack Obama’s campaign spending advantage impacted the outcome of the 2008 presidential election.

Heidi M. Ravven, professor of religious studies, gave a paper, "What Maimonides and Spinoza Can Teach us About Moral Psychology and Agency," at the annual joint meeting of the Society for Jewish Ethics, Society for Christian Ethics, and Society for the Study of Islamic Ethics in New Orleans, Jan. 6-9.

On January 12, the first anniversary of the horrific Haitian earthquake, Assistant Professor of Africana Studies Nigel Westmaas was a guest on WRFG (Radio Free Georgia, Atlanta) 89.3.

Associate Professor of Government Sharon Werning Rivera and David W. Rivera, former lecturer in government, published an article titled “El'tsin, Putin, i Klinton: prezidentskoe liderstvo i rossiiskaya demokratiya v sravnitel'noi perspective” (“Yeltsin, Putin, and Clinton: Presidential Leadership and Russian Democratization in Comparative Perspective”) in the September 2010 edition of Mir i Politika (“The World and Politics”).

An article by Derek Jones, the Irma M. and Robert D. Morris Professor of Economics, and co-authors Panu Kalmi of Aalto University School of Economics in Aalto, Finland, and Antti Kauhanen of the Research Institute of the Finnish Economy in Helsinki, was recently published in the International Journal of Production Economics.

Professor of History Shoshana Keller wrote the introductory essay to the most recent "Journal of Women's History" book forum, a discussion of Kumari Jayawardena's The Erasure of the Euro-Asian.
