Hamilton Microfinance Extends Loan to Local Amish Farmer

Just days after arriving on campus after the winter break, members of Hamilton Microfinance (HMF) met with Tom Owens, CEO and president of ACCESS Federal Credit Union, to evaluate the club’s first loan application of 2016. After reviewing the application, the group voted unanimously to provide a $2,500 loan to Rudy (for Rudy's privacy, the club is not disclosing his last name), who plans to use the funds to buy machinery for his farm.  More ...

HAVOC Raises $1,026 for Utica Public Library Early Literacy Program

The Hamilton Association for Volunteering, Outreach and Charity (HAVOC) recently donated $1,026. to the Utica Public Library for its backpack exchange program.  The early literacy program offers themed activity backpacks for infants to children age 5.  Each backpack includes books, musical CDs, activities list and educational toys. These are borrowed by parents and caregivers to expand the library experience to the home.  More ...

Delegates of Hamilton College’s Student Assembly attended the bi-annual New York Six Student Government Conference held at Union College  on Nov. 6. Seven students from Hamilton’s Microfinance organization attended Lend for America’s 7th Annual Summit at Georgetown University in Washington, DC, on Nov. 7 and 8. The Hamilton Association for Volunteering Outreach and Charity (HAVOC) general board hosted an education and literacy panel on Nov. 17 which discussed libraries, the Common Core and the critical importance of early childhood literacy. The four panelists were Adjunct Professor Richard Hunt, Director of the Utica Public Library Darby O’Brien, America Reads Student Co-Director Erica Quach ’16, and Brian Sobotko ’16, head tutor at A Better Chance (ABC) House.  More ...

Mock Trial’s Third Repeat Victory at University of Rochester

Hamilton’s student-run Mock Trial team took home the 1st place trophy from the University of Rochester’s “Yellow Jacket Invitational”  held on Nov. 6-8. This is the third year in a row that the team has won this tournament. In addition, two of Hamilton’s attorneys (Silvia Radulescu ’17 and Andrew Fischer ’17) won Outstanding Attorney Awards, and one witness (Patrick McConnell ’19) won an Outstanding Witness Award. This means that the judges consistently ranked each student as being one of the best attorneys or witnesses in their trials.  More ...

Outing Club Gears Up With New Leader Training

Over the past month the officers and experienced leaders of the Hamilton Outing Club (HOC) have taken on the task of giving 35 new leaders the training that they need to lead trips for HOC. Student leaders are the heart of HOC and are responsible for leading almost all of the trips that go out during the school year -- ranging from easy day hikes in the Adirondacks to longer trips further afield during breaks.  More ...
