Our focus will be on world cinema and the relations between cinema and the diasporic communities in New York City. We will study the politics and economics of foreign films distributed and exhibited in the city, and attempts by avant garde and independent filmmakers to address issues of globalization and cultural diversity. Our study of film will include participation in the New York International Film Festival and attendance at special film series conducted by cultural centers in various parts of the city. Our approach to film study will be interdisciplinary and involve readings in the literature, history and film practices of Eastern European, Iranian, Indian and African-American, and Latin American filmmakers. We will also consider the questions of immigration and exile in American literature and films in New York City.
