Begin planning early for your study abroad costs! A study abroad semester may cost less, the same as, or more than a semester at Hamilton. Although study abroad can be expensive, planning and research can make it an attainable goal.
Your study abroad "program fee" probably includes tuition and housing, but you may have other study abroad expenses beyond that fee. Depending on the program, you may be responsible for airfare, room, board, in-country travel, books, fees, etc. Make sure that you and anyone providing financial support for you understand what is covered by your program fee.
What will a semester or year of study abroad really cost, and how will those costs compare with your typical college expenses? You can use this financial planning worksheet and information from your study abroad program to get a good estimate.
In considering the cost of your time abroad, please be aware that Hamilton College as of Fall 2011 Hamilton study abroad fee will be $1500/semester or $2000/academic year for all students attending non-Hamilton study abroad programs (ie, programs other than Hamilton in New York, Hamilton in Washington, NECC, ACC, HCAYS, HCJYF, and NYSICCSI).
Many Hamilton students studying abroad receive financial aid, and Hamilton College will work with students receiving aid to try to make their study abroad goal achievable. Please see Understanding Your Financial Aid While You Study Abroad for a complete explanation. Once you have a good idea of where you will go and with which program, consult Diane Barrett in the Financial Aid Office (315-859-4395) to be sure you understand your situation.
