HONOR SYSTEM AND HONOR COURT The Honor Code considers offenses that the College community defines as academically dishonest. The Honor System is a vital element in the scholarly tradition of Hamilton College. The student Honor Code governs the administration of examinations and the preparation of all coursework. Students are expected to use their sense of honor when they take examinations, write papers and prepare laboratory reports. Implicit in the Honor System are two imperatives: every student must refrain from academic dishonesty, and each student is expected to take action when dishonest activity is observed. The Honor Court administers the rules of the Honor System and hears cases involving infractions of the Honor Code. In order to matriculate at Hamilton, all students must read the Honor Court Constitution and sign an oath of acceptance of the regulations. Penalties for academic dishonesty are severe, and students should be aware that the Honor Code is not to be taken lightly. Students should understand that the purpose of the Court is to protect the student body from acts that are simply not tolerated in a scholarly community.
JUDICIAL BOARD The Judicial Board adjudicates student infractions of general standards of conduct and college regulations not covered by the Honor Code. The board consists of seven student and three faculty representatives in addition to the student chair. Student representatives are elected from each class for one-year terms. The faculty representatives are elected by the faculty for staggered three-year terms, and the chair is elected at large by the student body for a one-year term. If the board finds that a violation of College policy has occurred, it can assign sanctions ranging from a warning to permanent expulsion from the College.
STUDENT ASSEMBLY Hamilton College's student governing body, the Student Assembly undertakes executive, legislative and judicial responsibilities. The assembly's role is twofold: to represent the needs and desires of the student body to members of the faculty, administration and trustees; and to provide leadership in student activities. There are three branches of the Student Assembly - the judicial branch (Judicial Board and Honor Court); the lobbying branch (The Community Conference Committee); and the Central Council, which is responsible for coordinating student initiatives and the activities of the other two branches.
