Student Assembly Minutes
April 6, 2009
A. Call to Order: 9:02 pm
B. Dean Thompson: Class and Charter Day Discussion
Class & Charter Day parties on Griffin Road are problematic for students, administrators and residents due to serious alcohol-related medical emergencies and students wandering/trespassing onto private properties
Last year, there were 8 alcohol-related EMT calls on Class & Charter Day, resulting in 4 ambulances transporting students to the hospital
This year, the College will NOT be allowing the event at Griffin Road to occur and the administration wants to support students in facilitating an alternate end-of-year celebration and reach a solution prior to Class & Charter Day
A member asked about the possible consequences or preventions Campus Safety will take to ensure safety of students on Class & Charter Day
A member noted that the partying and drinking are simply a tradition of Class & Charter Day rather than the location where it is held
A member asked if designated social spaces were possible for that day/evening
Lisa Magnarelli, Director of Student Activities noted that all social spaces are still open for Class & Charter Day. Any organization who wishes to reserve one should contact the Office of Student Activities
A member noted that the College should work with students and the campus media to encourage and promote responsibility and safety while celebrating Class & Charter Day
A member noted that the combination of HamTrek events and students from Griffin Road parties pose several serious safety issues for participants of HamTrek
A member noted that HamTrek could serve as an alternative to the Griffin Road event. This year's HamTrek will include more field events
A member noted that a "Battle of the Bands" event could serve as another possible alternative
