Academic Programs, Appointments and Research InformationEnvironmental Studies Major Established in 2005, the Environmental Studies Program at Hamilton explores the complex connections through an interdisciplinary program that balances broad, practical groundwork and focused individual study. Departments involved include Government, Geosciences, Philosophy, Biology, English, Religious Studies and Economics. Arthur Levitt Public Affairs Center - Sustainability Program This broad-based, multifaceted initiative promotes both academic research on sustainable practices and the policies to achieve them as well as hands-on learning experiences for Hamilton students. More than 28 faculty members participate in this program. Program Web site Joel W. Johnson Family Professorship in Environmental Studies $2.5 million professorship established by Joel W. Johnson '65 and his wife Elizabeth, and awarded to Professor Eugene Domack in 2007. Environmental Historian Professor Peter Cannavo (government) appointed as environmental historian. $500,000 Sherman Fairchild Foundation grant for scientific equipment and technician support to provide a multidisciplinary approach to identification and remediation of environmental issues. Levitt Summer Research Fellows Two students who received Levitt Fellowship grants for the summer 2007 on projects related to sustainability:
Community Garden, funded by the Levitt Center A service learning project that helps to build and maintain a community garden at the site of Adrean Terrace/F.X. Matt/N.D. Peters Apartments, a public housing complex run by the Utica Municipal Housing Authority. The community garden is open to all residents of the apartment complex and has the goals of facilitating the consumption of locally grown produce and encouraging community development. Supported by Home Depot, the Community Foundation of Herkimer & Oneida Counties, The Arthur Levitt Center and many student volunteers. |
