Art and Interpretation: The Genesis of an Exhibition
This seminar examines the teaching and collecting philosophy of Edward W. Root, Class of 1905 that will be the theme of a major exhibition, entitled The Best Kind of Life: Edward W. Root as Teacher, Collector, and Naturalist,
presented at the Emerson Gallery in 2007 in collaboration with the Munson-Williams-Proctor Arts Institute. It is an opportunity for students to participate in the early planning and conceptual design stages of a museum exhibition. It will include readings in studio art and theory, art history, museum studies, and local history, and will possibly include field trips. The final project will employ the digital platform to create a web-based presentation that will combine image and text. Each student will be responsible for interpreting one work of art using the didactic model developed by Edward W. Root. The web-based presentation may provide the student-generated component for the larger body of didactic material for the 2007 exhibition.
Students will create a website and enhanced podcasts as their final project for the Spring 2007 Sophmore Seminar entitled "Art and Interpretation: The Genesis of an Exhibition."

GarageBand and iWeb will be used to create the podcasts and website. Audio tours will be played on 80gb video iPods.

Goals, Process and Outcomes
The overall educational goals are for students to learn the fundamentals of exhibition planning, art interpretation, and how to converse about art.
Faculty Interview: Project Goals
By the end of this course project, students should be able to:
- Understand exhibition planning
- Understand presentation
- Verbally articulate what they are thinking and feeling when they experience a work of art
- Translate visual observations into written word
- Understand the social history and art history background of the works they are covering
- Articulate the intent of the artist (what is the artist trying to convey)
- Perform an analysis of the works. Break them into component parts and then bring the parts back together
- Create and convey an accurate interpretation of the art
- Use the selected technologies to accomplish their communication goals
Faculty Interview: Learning Objectives
Students will attend workshops given by ITS Instructional Support on use of iWeb and GarageBand and will work with the instructor to add content to a pre-designed website that presents information about Edward Root as a teacher, collector, and naturalist. Students will also receive instruction from Oral Communications to ensure that they understand how to speak for public presentation. The site will contain an introductory welcome page, and sections that reflect the major themes in the exhibition, including a biography of Root and his contributions as a teacher, collector and naturalist. The site will also contain a list of enhanced podcasts that will be created by the students. These podcasts will be produced individually by students using GarageBand and USB microphones. Students will need to contact AV to reserve the recording room to make their recordings. These podcasts will be added to the website and to video iPods as a virtual tour of the exhibit entitled The Best Kind of Life: Edward W. Root as Teacher, Collector, and Naturalist
The final project will employ a web-based presentation that will combine images and text. Each student will be responsible for interpreting a work or works in the exhibition using the didactic model developed by Edward W. Root and presenting their interpretation as an enhanced podcast. The web-based presentation may provide the student-generated component for the larger body of didactic material for the 2007 exhibition.
Students will create and format text and image material and add this content to the website that clearly shows Edward Root’s contributions as a teacher, collector and naturalist. Each student will also create a high-quality enhanced podcast that uses both audio and images to accurately describe one of the exhibits. These podcasts will be usable as a virtual tour for gallery patrons via video iPod. The text from the podcast will also be used as entries for the catalog that will accompany the exhibition.
Faculty Interview: Learning Outcomes
Students reported that they enjoyed creating their podcasts and also benefited from the collaborative and constructive aspects of using images and words to share and support their ideas. Students enjoyed learning to look at the artwork in new and different ways and appreciated the podcast format because, though they had not created their own podcasts before, podcasting was a technology that was familiar to them.
