Hamilton Environmental Action Group (HEAG)

The Hamilton Environmental Action Group, or HEAG, is a student-run environmental advocacy group. HEAG holds weekly meetings to discuss and solve environmental issues. Its mission is to inspire Hamilton to become a green campus — a campus that uses sustainable energy, recycles and is aware of its environmental impact. HEAG’s major goals and responsibilities include:

  • Organizing Green Week
  • Managing and facilitating energy reduction competitions (through Hamilton’s energy dashboard)
  • Supporting the composting program on campus

Recycling Task Force (RTF)

Formed in the fall of 2004, the Recycling Task Force is a select group of students who are enthusiastic recyclers and are in charge of improving Hamilton’s recycling program under the direction of the Physical Plant. The task force assists with managing recycling stations on campus, distributing blue bins to dorm rooms and working on special projects, for instance expanding compost collection in residential spaces. Timothy Gadziala, assistant director of physical plant for custodial and grounds and head of recycling, manages the task force, but students lead it. The task force acts a liaison between the student body and administration and works to improve recycling at Hamilton. Current projects include raising awareness for Recyclemania, hosting the Trashion Show, spearheading a composting program for individual dorm rooms and revamping recycling posters. Hamilton Food Alliance

In 2014, the Hamilton Food Alliance was formed to promote collaboration between food-minded organizations on campus. Leaders of the Real Food Challenge, Slow Food Hamilton, Hamilton Community Farm, Hamilton Farmer’s Guild, Vegan & Animal Rights Society, Club Ento and Culinary Society meet once a month to discuss food sustainability at Hamilton and coordinate food-related events. By forming a coalition, the organizations can support one another’s goals and initiatives and increase their visibility on campus.
