‘Planting the Sugar Cane’ from Ten Views of the Island of Antigua, 1823. Donation from Walter Beinecke, Jr.

Students in the Africana Studies Department have access to a substantial collection of works on Africana in Burke Library, including a number of rare texts. Most notable is the Beinecke Lesser Antilles Collection, regarded as one of the world's most important research collections of historical documents from and about this Caribbean region. The collection includes hundreds of rare original documents, fifty maps, plantation reports, correspondence, and oil paintings and watercolors. The collection was originally developed by Walter Beinecke, Jr., and donated to the Hamilton College Library.
