Your FAFSA has been randomly selected by the U.S. Department of Education for a process called verification. Before we can process your request for financial aid, additional action is required.

To complete the verification process, you must:

  • Complete your FAFSA using the IRS Data Retrieval Tool. Please access your online FAFSA, make a correction, and use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool. This will update your FAFSA with your tax information directly from the IRS. All data retrieval results will be encrypted on your FAFSA in an effort to reduce the chances of compromising sensitive data and the risk of identity theft.
  • If you are ineligible to use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool, you are required to submit an IRS tax return transcript of your federal income tax return to Hamilton's Office of Financial Aid. You can request an official transcript online or by mail. There is no charge from the IRS to request this documentation.
  • The most secure way to submit your official tax transcript is through Hamilton's website.

Verification must be completed by July 1st in order for your financial aid to be applied to your bill. If we are not able to verify your FAFSA, your financial aid will be withheld. Please note that your financial aid checklist will be updated once we have completely reviewed all of your financial aid materials for verification.

IRS Data Retrieval Process

  1. Visit fafsa.ed.gov and click “Login" then “Make FAFSA Corrections”. Once in the FAFSA, navigate to the “Financial Information” tab, where the option to use the tool will display for eligible students and parents.
  2. You must ensure that the name and address of the FIRST PERSON LISTED on a joint tax return is the same on the FAFSA. The addresses must be identical, including all punctuation, abbreviations and spacing.
  3. When you have finished completing the IRS Data Retrieval Tool process, please be sure to re-sign the FAFSA with your FSA ID. The IRS Data Retrieval process will remain incomplete without this important final step being completed.

Obtain a Tax Return Transcript from the IRS

If you and/or your parents are not eligible to use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool, the U.S. Department of Education requires our office to collect a certified tax return transcript processed by the IRS. Please note that parents who are married but filing separately must submit 2 separate IRS tax return transcripts. Transcripts are not required for those filing a foreign or Puerto Rican tax return.

Please make sure you request a Tax Return Transcript. Do not request a Tax Account Transcript or Record of Account because they cannot be used for financial aid verification purposes.
