Request for Additional Tax Information

Based on information reported on your federal income tax return, the Financial Aid Office is requesting that you submit supporting documentation from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). We will be unable to process your request for financial aid until the requested documentation has been received.

Proof of Non-Filing

Submit proof of non-filing by using Form 4506-T and selecting the checkbox for Item #7 (Verification of Non-filing). Please be certain to request the most current tax year. Note that current year requests are only available from the IRS after June 15th. There is no charge from the IRS to request this documentation.

Self-Prepared Federal Tax Return

For self-prepared federal tax returns, submit an online request for an IRS Return Transcript or use Form 4506-T. If using Form 4506-T, select the checkbox for Item #6A (Return Transcript). Please be certain to request the most current tax year. There is no charge from the IRS to request this documentation.

Amended Tax Return

Submit a signed copy of the original IRS Income Tax return that was filed with the IRS and a signed copy of the IRS Form 1040x, “Amended U.S. Individual Income Tax Return”, that was filed with the IRS.

Filed an Extension

Submit a copy of IRS Form 4868 “Application for Automatic Extension of Time to File U.S. Individual Income Tax Return” that has been filed with the IRS. If you requested an additional extension beyond the automatic six-month extension you must submit a copy of the IRS’s approval. In addition, all materials listed on the student’s online financial aid checklist should be sent to the Financial Aid Office except the current year federal income tax return and state income tax return (for NYS residents only). If the parent is self-employed, a signed statement certifying the amount of the AGI and the U.S. income tax paid for the current year must be submitted. As soon as the current year federal and state income tax returns become available, they should be sent to the Financial Aid Office.  Please note that all first-time financial aid applicants that are filing an extension will also be required to submit a complete copy of their previous federal income tax return.

Next Steps

The most secure way to submit your sensitive financial aid application materials is through Hamilton’s website. Documents can also be sent via the mail, fax (315-859-4962), or as a scanned PDF file to finaid@hamilton.edu. We cannot accept other file formats. Please include the name of the student on all materials.

Once the requested documentation has been received and reviewed by the Financial Aid Office, we will make every attempt to process your request for financial aid as soon as possible provided that all other application materials have been received and are complete.
