Pending the availability of funds, the U.S. Department of State provides scholarships for critical language study in: Arabic, Russian, Chinese, Persian, Turkish, and Indic languages/language. This language initiative is designed to dramatically expand the number of Americans studying and mastering critical need foreign languages.
ELIGIBILITY
  • Must be US citizen
  • Must be undergraduate, Master’s or Ph.D. student to participate in beginning, intermediate and advanced level summer language programs at American Overseas Research Centers.
  • Recipients of this scholarship will be expected to continue their language study beyond the scholarship period and later apply their critical language skills in their professional careers.

SELECTION

This is a highly competitive program. Applicants must show significance for studying a specific critical language; a plan for continued language study after the summer session; and, plans for use of language in professional life.


AWARDS

Programs range from 6 weeks to 11 weeks, beginning in early to mid-June. Programs begin with a pre-departure orientation session in Washington, DC. All program costs are covered for participants, including: travel between the student’s home city, Washington, DC, and program location, room, board, travel within country and all entrance fees for program activities.
